√ 3x − 2 = 4 − x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 3x -2 is all under the radical sign, I don't know if that changes much.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

square both sides

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

do you know how ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe so, let me try it out & I'll see if it's right.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

than will get 3x-2=16-8x+x^2

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

ok ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why does the 8 have an x as well?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

so do you know the formula is (a-b)^2 = a^2 -2ab +b^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay now I'm totally lost. I had gotten 3x-2=16-x^2 Which I presumably need to factor. I had changed that into -x^2+3x+18=0, I thought all I needed now was to factor.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

4-x squared not is 16-x^2 because there is (4-x) squared

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

- both sides sign all terms toghether and not single, alon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4-x isn't in parentheses though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(\sqrt{3x}+x)^{2}=6^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I actually guessed & got it right. So thanks anyways.
