the uptown tire shop has a tank that is filled with water and it is used to check tires for leaks. The tank measures 2'9'' long 12'' wide and 18'' deep. How many cubic feet of water will the tank hold when completely full? write the formula and solve (do not round your answer)

OpenStudy (kropot72):

can you write the formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is what am trying to find out :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3'/6''=42 1'/6''=18 x12?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

volume = length x width x depth. Can you write each of the measurements in feet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3'.6''=42 1'.6''-18 x 12''?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my keyborad sucks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in feet 3.'6'' 1'.6'' 12'' deep

OpenStudy (kropot72):

length = 2.75' width = 1.0' depth = 1.5'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u get that could u break it down for me pleasee that is the part where am confused

OpenStudy (kropot72):

length = 2'9" =2.75' 9" is three quarters of a foot. In decimals 0.75 is equivalent to three quarters. Does this make sense? To do the calculation all the measurements should be in feet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it does dang i was close you are kwel

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Good. Can you put the width of 12" into feet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it not 12'' =one foot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my question is how did u change the dimensions into decimals can u help there?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Good one! Put it down as width = 1.0' Similarly the depth of 18" will be how many feet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow am surprising myself i never went to school and now all this is new to me but small steps will take me far away

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one sec thinking

OpenStudy (kropot72):

To convert 18" to decimal feet do the following:\[18\div12=1.5\]'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i ws doint that lol am just a slow type...u are a great help am happy happy 3 times

OpenStudy (kropot72):

So you get the volume of the tank in cubic feet as follows:\[2.75\times1.0\times1.5\] Can you use a calculator to multiply it out?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.125?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

You are right. But don't forget to write cubic feet after your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4125 cubic feet i am not sure i have a cubic symbol on ma keybord is a number 3 right?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

You can put either 4.125 cubic feet or 4.125 cu.ft.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it? are ready for anothe rQ? or u bussy?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Please ask another :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on am slow type ok bear with me please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

refer to the last problem one cubic foot contains 7/2 gallons of water .How many gallons of water does the tank hold when completely full? (round your answer to the nearest gallon.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Each cubic foot contains 7/2 = 3.5 gallons. Therefore you multiply the number of cubic feet of water by 3.5 to find how many gallons. Would you try to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one i can not seem to be able to fgure out cause am reading that we have the tank and the tank hold 5125 cubic feet right? based on the previous qeustion

OpenStudy (kropot72):

The volume of the tank is 4.125 cubic feet. Note the decimal point.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4125x7.5=30937.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and since i have to round it to the nearest gallom that would be 31 galloins right?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

So the quantity of water in gallons is found as follows: \[4.125\times3.5=14.4375 gallons\] So the answer rounded to the nearest gallon is 14 gallons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see go t it let me write all down ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one last question?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Sure :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one minute deal?

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

refer the previous problem, if the tank were completely full water would splash out ointo the floor when a tire is placed in the tank. Therefore assume that the tank will be filled only to 75% of its capacity (3/4 full). How many gallons will fill 3/4 of the tank? write an equation and solve (round your answer to the nearest gallon.)

OpenStudy (kropot72):

The full capacity of the tank is 14.4375 gallons. 75% capacity of the tank is: \[14.4375\times75\div100 gallons\] =10.828 gallons = 11 gallons to the nearest gallon
