Find a formula for the general term a_n of the sequence {1, -1/2, 1/4,-1/8,...}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, do you see the pattern?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that its an alternating sequence. Since "1" is positive, it must be raised to a poitive number. And the denominator is squared. But I dont know how to put it in a formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[A{n}=(-1/2)^{n-1}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yessss, = (( Is there a way I can recognize a formula easier??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well that's why I asked you if you recognized the pattern, you should always look for the pattern first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The more questions you do, the more patterns you will recognize, so my best advice is to practice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I noticed the 1/2 before. But didnt think to include it in the formula. Thank youu!! Can you look out for more of my sequences?? lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure, I'll be glad to help, but always make your own best attempt first, it's the best way to learn, anything you get stuck on, just post it up, either myself or some other friendly user will be here to help

Thaaaank you!!
