solve |x-11|>10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|x-11|>10 (x-11)>10 , -(x-11)>10 x>10+11 , -x>-1 ( divide by -1) x>21 , x<1

u need more explanation ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please just a little. I am helping my 15 year old with math and want to be able to explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok first of all do u know what is that | | ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

absolute value?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats right , so lets take a simple example |x+2|=4 when u want to remove the absolute value u should put positive and negative sign instead of it and u can put it either in right side or left side so in that example it will be x+2 =+,- 4 and then u divide the paper in two sides the first will be (x+2)=4 , x=4-2=2. and the second will be (x+2)=-4 , x=-4-2=-6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in your question its said that |x-11|>10 so u will divide the paper in two sides the first will be (x-11)>10 , x>21 and the second will be -(x-11)>10 ,-x+11>10 ,-x>10-11 ,-x>-1 ,so when u divide by a negative number u should change the direction of the symbols so it will be x<1

Got it !?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes...thanks sorry at work and had to step away from my desk
