Number 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are only 4 in the picture for me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant number 4, sorry!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tell me what you get. I have my answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about your ratios?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[9\div24 = x \div 1024\]And then solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I want to check/compare my answers; what did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh haha, okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's 144 mm for the area though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Post your solution, I am pretty sure mine is wrong :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's 139mm^2, now. So, 144 is nearer it. :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since you are looking for the area of the smaller one, you have to make a proportion you do" 9/24=x/1024

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But 9/24 is not apples to apples with 1024 because 1024 is the area. Simplified, 9/24 is 3/8 (simplifying just makes the work easier). So 3/8 squared is 9/64. Then you can solve the proportion: 9/64=x/1024, which gives you 144. 139 may be close, but it is still incorrect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=pentagon+side+%3D+9 139 is closer to it, I think. It's only rounding errors, though. You thought the problem correctly, the shame is on me :-). Kudos for solving it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, who knows, I may be wrong.
