OpenStudy (pfenn1):

help with what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

With the image above.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Have you answered any of the questions so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, i dont understand it.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Okay. y = safe load in pounds x = length in feet for a horizontal beam k = a constant of proportionality such that y=k/x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 1200=k/20 ??

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

for problem 30, yes!

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

so what is k equal to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, 24000?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

if 1200=k/20 we solve for k and get k=20 * 1200 = ?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yes.....24000.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Now going back a moment. Did you answer question 29?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

okay, it is asking how x is related to y in the equation y=k/x

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Do you know what a direct relationship between x and y means? that if x increase, what does y do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im not sure? direct?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

If y increases as x increases, for example, in the equation y=3x, that is a direct relationship.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

In the equation y=k/x, as x increases, what happens to y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im confused.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

As x gets larger, the ratio k/x gets smaller (remember, k is a constant value). So as x gets larger, y becomes smaller. y and x are related in a inverse manner. As one gets big the other gets smaller and vice versa.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

If the equation was y = 1/x, as x gets bigger, y would get smaller, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok. So for 31, y=800

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yes, so if y is 800 and k is 2400, what is x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yes!

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

How about problem 32?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60 lbs?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

yes!

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

do you have to do 33?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah. So what would the equation be, so i can find the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt it be the first graph? with just a straight line going through 0?

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

I can't see the graphs, but probably. We know the equation is y = 24000/x so from problems 31, and 32, you already have 2 points, (30, 800) and (40, 600) so you can check those against the graphs.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

Oops, I just realized that you dropped a zero on your answer to question 32. It should have been 600 pounds.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

I also realized that I wrote 2400 instead of 24000 for k up above in one of my responses. Hope that didn't confuse you.

OpenStudy (pfenn1):

So are you all set?
