What is the measure of the angle formed by the minute hand and the hour hand of a clock when the clock shows 4:35?
At 4:35, the minute hand is on :35. Since the clock is a circle it has 360 degrees and 60 minutes, so we can think of each minute holding 6 degrees. Moving clockwise from the :00 position, :35 can be said to have 35*6 degrees then or 210 degrees
getting the hour hand's angle is harder. We know that the hour hand moves in proportion to the minute hand; that is, at 4:30, the hour hand will be right between the 4 and 5. So we need proportions to show us how far from 4 and close to 5 the hour hand is. The minute hand is on :35 which can be written as the fraction 35/60 aka 7/12. Therefore, the hour hand is at 7/12 of the distance from 4 and 5.
Ok.... But First I Thought It Was 120 But They Said I Got That Wrong So I Got Real Confused But Here Are My Choices A. 72.5° B. 90° C. 120° D. 72°
Now we need to convert all this info to degrees. When the hour hand is at 4, it's at 4/12 in relation to the clock. This can be converted over a total of 360 degrees by multiplying the top and bottom by 30 -- 120/360. We can't forget the 7/12 I mentioned before though. Notice that 7/12 describes only a portion of the distance from 4 to 5 (the total distance between 4 and 5 is 5 minutes aka 30 degrees)
btw the answer i got was A
So the hour hand has a distance (moving clockwise from the 12:00 position) of 120 plus 7/12 of 30 degrees which is \[120+{7 \over 12}(30)\] which is 137.5
you need the distance between the minute and hour hands, and the minute hand has moved farther on the clock than the hour hand so subtract the hour hand distance (137.5) from the minute hand distance (210). You should get A. 72.5
I hope this makes a little bit of sense. It's hard to describe without the person right next to me haha
Omg! You Have No Idea How Much This Really Helped Me! No This Really Helped! Thank You So Much!!
haha glad to be of help ^^
90-17.5=67.5
sorry 90-17.5=72.5
