Reducing agent is one that Reduces the other reactant, When a molecule or atom is reduced it will GAIN electrons, here Oxygen GAINED electrons in the result ( 0 oxidation state to now -2) so reducing agent is Magnesium. This means that Mg got oxidized by Oxygen. Easy to remember: OIL - oxidized is loose, RIG-reduced is gain
