how do i do synthetic division

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its quite simple, you got an example?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do not

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its important the your poly is "all filled in" meaning that you include all the x^n parts in succession. \[x^4+x^2+1\to\ x^4+0x^3+x^2+0x^1+1\]

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the rest is just adding and multiplying ....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there are different setups, and you should pick something that suits you ... quite frankly, if you keep your poly intact it works the same way ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have an example hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x^3+3x^2-x-2 divided by x-2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

3,2,1,0 its powers are in order, so we aint got to fill in any spots. the value of x that zeros out the divide by part is something we will use; x=2 makes that go zero now for the setup

OpenStudy (amistre64):

poly here 0 add this row ------------- root ) multiply by this row

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2x^3 + 3x^2 - x - 2 0 4 14 26 -------------------- 2 ) 2 7 13 24 drop a level on your power to create 2x^2 +7x +13 + 24/(x-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i didnt understnd any of that :(

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im sure you have questions about it, it would be better if yo actually asked them instead of relying upon me to read your mind :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

basically i dont understand words in an explanation i need to know more what numbers need to go where and do what

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats what i outlined here to the best of my ability poly here 0 add this row ------------- root ) multiply by this row

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats a poly what 0 what root?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand math terms

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a poly is a polynomial; that equation with all the powers of x in it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

0 is just the starting value you add to get the ball rolling the root is what i defined as being the zero of the divide by portion

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x-2 = 0 ; x= 2 makes this zero. so the root is 2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2x^3 + 3x^2 - x - 2 <-- this was your poly 0 4 14 26 <-- these values you add to the polys number term -------------------- 2 ) 2 7 13 24 <-- these values you multiply the root by ^ this is the root

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2+0 = 2 2*2 = 4 3+4 = 7 2*7 = 14 -1+14 = 13 2*13 = 26 -2+26 = 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for trying to help but i give up :(

OpenStudy (amistre64):

'sok :) good luck
