Question

How do you know if you have cancer or if you have diabetes? I mean, what are the symptoms? Or is there any in cancer? Because a friend of my teacher had cancer and he didn't even know about it until he was in the final stage and they couldn't cure him. :(

Whether there are symptoms and what those symptoms are depends on what kind of cancer it is.

The early symptoms of cancer are caused by the cancer cells disrupting the function of normal cells and tissue. For example, in leukemia where all the new blood cells are suddenly becoming white blood cells instead of red, there aren't enough red blood cells to carry oxygen and the person feels tired all the time. Another example is a bone or muscle tumor pressing against nerve cells, which is while bone and muscle cancers are very painful.

Other cancers, like colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and liver cancer are very difficult to detect early because they don't produce symptoms until the disease is very far advanced.

Breast cancer is bad. It is often detected fairly early - usually a woman (or man, men can get breast cancer too) notices a lump of cancerous cells growing inside the breast - and doctors are able to treat it. I believe that the prognosis in breast cancer gets much worse when the cancer cells get into the lymphatic vessels which drain the breast as they can spread through these vessels to the rest of the body.

It also depends on how you define "worst." In its later stages, breast cancer is very painful because breasts are sensitive, lots of nerve cells and feeling.

Usually the cancers with the really terrible prognoses are the ones which are difficult to detect early, sometimes not until they have spread to other parts of the body.

*I should say, they can treat it with chemo therapy, radiation, and sometimes surgery when the person decides to have doctors remove part or all of the affected breast to keep it from spreading.

Blues has summed up what is a complex subject really well. Diabetes is another important disease and is becoming more common. The classic symptoms are thirst, hunger and frequent urination. The disease is characterised by high blood sugar, which is the result of either insufficient insulin or resistance of the cells to the effects of insulin. People can be born with it (type I, juvenile diabetes, usually not enough insulin) or develop it (type II resistance to insulin). The type I can be treated with insulin shots whereas other drugs are required for type II.
