Let f(x) = 3x - 42 and g(x) = 5x. Part 1 [4 points] What is (f ◦ g)(x) ? Part 2 [2 points] Use complete sentences to describe the method you used to solve this problem. Really stuck on the whole (f ◦ g)(x) what does that mean

f*g(x) and f(g(x)) are different functions. For starters, you're missing a closing parentheses in the Part 1, which makes me think it should be the latter. If it wanted you to multiply the equations, there would be a dot in the middle of f and g, which is what you said we need to do. What's more troubling is that last sentence which seems to defy anything I ever learned in Algebra II, but hey, we'll solve it for all methods. f(g(x)) simply means to plug in g(x) into f(x) Thusly, if we substitute x for g(x), we get f(x)=3(g(x))-42 Again, we substitute g(x) into the equation: 3(5x)-42= 15x-42 f*g(x) is where we multiply the two equations: (3x-42)(5x) Since it's only a monomial and a binomial, we can use the distributive property, which gives us: 15x^2-230x Going by what you said we need to do in that last sentence, we'll borrow from what we just did and multiply by x x(15x^2-230x) Again, distributive property gives us: 15x^3-230x^2
