Hey all, I actually think the answer in this case may be flagellated sperm. Flagellated sperm require water to reproduce (they need something to swim through) which is why mosses and ferns are not as widespread as, say, the angiosperms (flowering plants) which don't have flagellated sperm (they spread their sperm/pollen through insects, animals, the wind, etc.) . As for sporophytes, this refers to the stage of plant life in which spores are formed. In higher plants, this is actually the most pronounced stage. If you've seen a tree, that's the sporophyte stage, so it doesn't only appear in mosses and ferns. What do you think, @Muqn?
