If the hypotenuse of an isosceles right triangle is 10, what is the length of one leg? a) 3 square root of 2 b) 5 square root of 2 c) 5 d) 7 square root of 2

OpenStudy (shubhamsrg):

theres a trigonometry solution,a geometric solution and a pythagoras solution.. pythagoras is quite easy,,use it .. since its isosceles,,and hypotenuse cant be equal to any other side,,we have x^2 + x^2 = 10^2 ..guess its easy now ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still dont get it. sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait is it: letter b?

OpenStudy (shubhamsrg):

let the unknown side be x .. now since its isosceles triangle,,and the hypotenuse has to be the greatest side among all the sides,,we have base = altitude =x .. now using pythagoras theorem,,we get the eqn which i wrote..

OpenStudy (shubhamsrg):

yes its "b"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. is it 5^2?

OpenStudy (shubhamsrg):

not 5^2 but 5 sqrt(2)
