Basically, respiration is a process that provides energy. Most of the energy is used for cellular activities: metabolism, cell division, growth, etc. Respiration conserves energy very efficiently. Carbon dioxide, required for photosynthesis by green plants, is replenished by carbon dioxide released in respiration. Similarly, oxygen required for respiration is replenished by oxygen released in photosynthesis. Thus, photosynthesis and respiration are complementary to each other and together help to maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in nature.

My understanding is that during the process of making ATP using the electron transport chain, the energy of electrons is released to create a proton gradient. The proton gradient, as you know, is what powers ATP synthase. But, the spent electrons need somewhere to go. And that's what oxygen does - it acts as a final electon acceptor. By combining with a few electrons and a few protons, it becomes water, a harmless byproduct of the reaction. Hope this helps!

Respiration is a profound and fundamental aspect of motion, the indigenous motility of the body, coextensive with life. If you are still confused, I highly recommend you read this article I attached. It's very interesting, and explains the importance of respiration thoroughly.

if there will be high partial pressure of oxygen in the lungs compared to those in our blood tissues, exchange of gases b/n them is possible

Partial pressure is basically the concentration of gases. It is called partial pressure because the pressure a gas adds to a system, is directly related to the concentration it has in the system.
