Find AE and ED and add.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how this is what i struggle at

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To do that, note that BCE is a right angle. So angle B of BCD is 90 - 30 = 60 degrees. You can now find BD. Then use that to find ED. Then find BE as well to solve AE.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i cant figure it out

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

tan(45) = AE/BE tan(45) = AE/30 30*tan(45) = AE 30*1 = AE 30 = AE AE = 30 ------------------- tan(30) = ED/BE tan(30) = ED/30 30*tan(30) = ED ED = 30*tan(30) ED = 30*(sqrt(3)/3) ED = 10*sqrt(3) --------------------------- AD = AE + ED AD = 30 + 10*sqrt(3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 = BE is not 30 units long.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes it is, it's the same length as CD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im so lost

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D'oh, you gotta be kidding me.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Oh I forgot to give the approximate answer AD = 30 + 10*sqrt(3) AD = 30 + 17.3205 AD = 47.3205 The answer is then 47.32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have 2 pll sayin somethin different sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 's solution is easier. Didn't notice BE = CD and overthought the problem. Since BE = 30 cm, then use tan to find AE. Then use tan to find ED and add them together.
