how was the us affected by the attack on pearl harbor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

before pearl harbor bombing the u.s. practice isolationism which is the desire to avoid involvement in the affairs of other nations. after the bombing american isolationism quikcly disappeared. on december 8th u.s. declared war on japan three days later germany and italy declared war on u.s. and this led the u.s. to join the allied powers which were great britain and france

we were isolationist until then. IT has been said that Pearl Harbor woke the sleeping giant the United States. We did not want any part of the war until we were forrced into the war with the attack. It was a pride thing and it mnade the once distant world war personal

Far less than the attacking Japanese hoped. Although several battleships were severely damaged, and many aircraft, most aircraft carriers were absent -- and it would be carriers that would be crucial in the war in the Pacific. Imperial Japan had hoped to cripple American naval power in the Far East, until it had succeeded in consolidating its conquests in Southeast Asia, the Phillipines, and China. This would have happened if they had destroyed the American carriers, because carriers take years to build. Thus Pearl Harbor is a monument to stupidity: it was both a military (because it failed to destroy the carriers) and political (because it provided Roosevelt with a casus belli) failure. The remarkable fact is that the government of Japan was willing to take such an appalling risk. But the bushido culture of the time tended to lead otherwise crafty and dangerous men to make stupid and futile decisions. Indeed, ironically enough, bushido culture, rather than serving as a source of strength and superiority for the Japanese military, was very likely its principal weakness.
