So let's say you want to bring all the x variables on the left hand side of the equation. That means the -x on the right needs to go to the left. You do that by adding +x to both sides of the equation.

So the -x + x on the right hand side = 0.

And on the right hand side -1/2 x + x = positive 1/2 x.

The equation now looks like

1/2 x + 3 = 7.
