Describe the role of the cochlea in hearing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cochlea is a part of internal ear which contain organ of corti. it a tube of 3.5 cm and is coiled like a snail shell. it is filled with endolymph.the canaal of cochela is divided into three chambers by membranes and are called Scala vestibuli (upper) Scala media (middle) and Scala tympani (lower) and these are filled with lymph. this was about cochlea.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now when the sound enters the ear and after crossing outer and middle ear sound waves are received by Scala vestibuli. due to sound vibration the perilymph of scala vestibuli now moves and pressure changes in it are transmitted to scala media through membrane.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from scala media vibrations are further transmitted to scala tympani. due to these events the lower membrane moves up and down and consequently the hair cell of organ of corti also moves up and down and strike with tectorial membrane these strokes generate nerve impulse which are transmitted to sensory neuron of auditory nerve........... and by brain sound sensation is feeled.

thats all. :)
