Eijkman went to Java to isolate the pathogen that was the cause of beriberi, an illness that appeared to be contagious as it was common in prisons and ships crews. The experiment with human subjects lacked a control. Results in chickens cannot be fairly compared to results in humans. The red rice was not given to all the prisoners with beriberi. The results were not published before being acted upon.

I agree that A would make sense. Without a control, there's no way of knowing if it was actually the red rice that made the prisoners better or if they just got better on their own. Controls are very important in scientific experiments!
