Why do people say "google it" or "I googled it", but they do not say "dictionary it" or "I Encyclopediad it." I know this is a silly question, but I thought it might start a cool discussion.
Perhaps "google it" caught on as a verb because it is sort of fun to say. It is a catchy phrase. "I dictionaried it" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Also, the internet revolution of communication and knowledge sharing brought with it a host of new words, and it just sort of seems permissible to invent new words to explain the new things we are able to do with the technology.
It does make sense to me that new words are invented to describe new things. I think you are dead on when you say " it is a catchy phrase." I just realized no one says "yahoo it" haha. I wonder what makes some phrases feel catchy. I am sure what feels right to say in English is different depending on your native tongue. Children don't feel weird saying things like "gooder", because they are just following logic.
