I need feedback from you guys. So what do you usually do when you run out of patience trying to explain a problem to a person for hours and they still don't get it. You try your best to make sure they understand all the steps but it isn't successful. Or maybe I just need to work on my patience?
Note to mods: This question is yet more evidence in favor of the education group I suggested.
ninhi, this is such a good question. First of all, we should all work on our patience as teachers. Ideally, as long as our students are willing to continue working with us, we should be patient enough to continue working with them. I think it's a tragedy if someone is willing to work hard to learn, and there is no one willing to help them. However, I will say that there are times when I've run out of patience and given up on explaining something to someone. Realistically, it's going to happen sometimes. I think we're just obligated to keep it from happening often.
I don't give out answers without explanations anymore since it's not a good method. I tried to help a person recently and they didn't want to cooperate but only want the answers instead. It's really hard to keep my patience, yet it is one of the most important aspects in education.
A one sentence answer. These are not the rules of OpenStudy and you should *report* the ones doing that.
Keep on explaining. You do well. And if you explain, you get the medals from others.
First of all, I <3 you for not giving answers anymore. You're a champ. It's a difficult thing to do though. There will be many many people who refuse to cooperate and only want answers. Some are more blatant about it than others. You can try to convince them to work with you to understand it, but if they refuse to think or try to learn, there's not much you can do to force them. All you can do unfortunately is choose not to help them, hope that others do not give them the answer, and report them as seeking an answer.
I agree that there is nothing to do but to try and help. However reporting a person for seeking the answers doesn't work for me since it's almost like punishing your students when they ask for help.
Well, we don't allow this kind of behavior here. Look at these profiles. You'll get good examples of what you should do in these cases. http://openstudy.com/users/CoreyContini http://openstudy.com/users/hithere Many still exist but I don't want to name them here :)
ninhi, this site is meant to be a learning community. We're here to teach, and the students should be here to learn. If they are truly here to learn, then they should be eager to hear explanation, and not necessarily that excited to receive an answer. If a student demonstrates that they are consistently only interested in answers, then they are not here to learn. They are here to cheat on homework, quizzes, or tests. To me, this is extremely hurtful to the learning environment we're trying to create, and it is well worth reporting.
sometimes a little trashtalking works....but i dont suggest it lol
I'm not above it.
