OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

at most 8 carbons in a chain, hence ...oct... a carbon-carbon double bound of the 3rd, hence ...-3-ene a methyl group on the 6th carbon, hence 6-methyl... put it all together 6-methyloct-3-ene

An extra complication here though: the C=C bond can have two possible arrangements, and cannot rotate. So we need to specify whether it is "cis" (Z) (the two larger groups on the same side of the bond) or "trans" (E) (the two larger groups on different sides of the bond). (Z) comes from the German for "same" or "together": zusammen In this case, it's "cis", or (Z): (Z)-6-methyloct-3-ene. Just to explain what I mean by "same side". Consider R to be a "large group": |dw:1338721205416:dw|
