How do you change the fraction 4x^3-8x^2+2x-1/2x into a mixed number?

OpenStudy (matt101):

Did you mean (4x^3-8x^2+2x-1)/2x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would you change that to a mixed expression??

OpenStudy (matt101):

You just divide each term by the denominator: (4x^3)/2x = 2x^2 --> "whole number" (-8x^2)/2x = -4x --> "whole number" 2x/2x = 1 --> "whole number" -1/2x = -1/2x --> fraction So the mixed number would be (2x^2 - 4x + 1) and -1/2x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 2x^2-4x+1(-1/2x)??

OpenStudy (matt101):

Yes...it's just a little confusing when written like that. For example, take five and three-quarters. The 2x^2-4x+1 is like the five, and the -1/2x is like the three-quarters.

i seee!!!! thank you so much!
