(2x+5)(x-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get stuck on the "foil"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(2x+5)(x-4)=0 2x + 5 = 0 x - 4 = 0 2x = -5 x = 4 x = -5/2

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

FOIL multiply the First terms multiply the Outside terms multiply the Inside terms multiply the Last terms first terms are 2x and x outside terms are 2x and -4 inside terms are 5 and x last terms are 5 and -4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So far I have 2x^2-2x+5x+1 2x^2+3x+1 2x^2+3x=-1 2x^2=-1/3 this is where i get stuck. I'm sure I'm doing something worng

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it just be 2x^2-3x-20?

OpenStudy (jkristia):

yep. Here it is step by step (2x+5)(x-4) 2x*x + 2x*(-4) + 5*x + 5*(-4) 2x^2 - 8x + 5x - 20 2x^2 - 3x - 20

OpenStudy (jkristia):

or are you trying to solve for x? In that case you can solve each term like 2x+5 = 0 => x = -5/2 and x-4 = 0 => x = 4, so your solution is x = -5/2 and 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it just says multiply. I think it is the 2x^2 - 3x - 20. thank you

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

^that's right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks everone. i have anonther problem like this it is (12-7x)(5+3x). is this right 12*5+12+3x-7x*5-7x*3x 60+36x-35x-21x^2 60+x-21x^2 ?

OpenStudy (jkristia):

yes, although you wrote 12 + 3x, but you did calculate it correct as 12 * 3x And you usually write the result with the highest power first, so the result would be -21x^2 + x + 60
