A pair of honest dice is rolled, and the number on each die is noted. How many different outcomes are there in the sample space?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

@monroe17 If I roll a die, how many possible outcomes are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does sample space mean?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Yeah you're right, it's 6 Sample Space= all possible outcomes

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Sample space refers to the list of all the possible outcomes of an experiment/event.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

So what do you think will be the no. of events if we roll two dices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh gotcha! Thank you guys!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

For eg. when you roll a dice, you can get a 1,2,3,4,5 or a 6, which is the sample space. so, 6 possible outcomes, hence 6 is the outcomes in the sample space.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

If I get 1 on one dice, the second can have 6 possible outcomes, do you think that 12 is the no. of outcomes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait im confused.. whats the question?

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Okay I think we blooped it. o.O i missed out the 'couple of' die. :/

OpenStudy (ash2326):

no. of outcomes when two dices are rolled (1, 1) , (1, 2)...... (1, 6) (2, 1) , (2, 2)...... (2, 6) . . . . (6,1 ) (6, 2)...........(6, 6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I got that. so 36?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Yeah:)

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

when you are rolling two dice, you can have, 1 on one dice, and 1,2,3,4,5,6 on the other. similarly two on the first's gace and 6 possibilities on the other, and so on.. so 6*6 = 36 You're righty-right!! :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, I had it right the first time i just second guessed myself and changed it to 12 lol!

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

lol no worries, okay now ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!
