What does (2) mean? The question is as follows: Find the linearization of (a+bx)^0.5 at 0, by using (2), and also by using the basic approximation formulas. (Here a and b are constants; assume x > 0. Do not confuse a with the one in (2), which has a value of 0.) I solved the linearization perfectly fine, but I don't know what it meant by (2).

If you look in the chapter, there will be formulas or equations. Off to the side of the first one that is considered important enough to refer to again will be a (1). The second one will have a (2) to the side. Rather than rewriting the equation each time it is referred back to, the author uses (2). To do the problem as instructed, you will need to see if you used the formula that (2) refers to.
