ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

what happens to capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor if we put conductor in between the plates, instead of a dielectric ? Since a conductor fully neutralizes the electric field, capacitance becomes infiniti ?

OpenStudy (kmazraee):

then the capacitance would never being charged!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

:P i didnt mean shorting both plates. just put a conductor slab in between.. just remove the dielectric and fill 90% of the space with conductor. its obvious that capacitance increases. how much will it increase.. since it reduces most of the potential difference... more and more charge should build up on plates right ?

OpenStudy (kmazraee):

then we have sudden discharging! between conductor and plates!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

can you explain how discharge happens since they are not electrically connected

OpenStudy (kmazraee):

do you know how Vandograoh works?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yeah bro.. i understand vandegraph concept. but how this Q is related to vandegraph i dont understand...

OpenStudy (kmazraee):

small connection! how he capactance expire!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

it ionizes the air and escapes out. but still my Q is not answered.. . guess i need the equation for capacitance with conductor in between..

OpenStudy (kmazraee):

yes, plz write ure eqs in conductors!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

hmmm i can try.. but not sure where to start from

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

conductor fully removes the electric field. potential difference become almost 0. and i am stuck..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do the conductor touch both of the plate? if not you just need to see it as two capacitor connect in series with each other, of course the distance between two plates of the capacitor will be reduced.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

makes good sense locnguyen... now im seeing electric field in the thin gap between one-end-of-conductor and plate.. i can start putting equations now. thanks a lot !!
