What's the difference between a function and an operator. Is one just a subdivision of the other?

an operator like a hammer! you can hurt it on a head of a field, then you have your favorite information about that field, but a function is'nt a hammer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A function is one type of operator. It's an operator that takes one real number and produces another. But there are many more and more complex operators, which take pairs of real numbers, a range of real numbers, or functions themselves and produce other things -- real numbers, pairs of real numbers, or other functions. An operator is a very broad concept, of which a function is just one example.
