can you tell me if i am right with this answer? it asks: State the degree of the following polynomial: -2x^4y + xy – y ... I put 4... if it is wrong please let me know why thanks

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

That's a good answer, but notice you have x and y as variables.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Since you have 2 variables, you need to add the exponents over each variable for each term

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So for -2x^4y, which is really -2x^4y^1, add the exponents to get 4+1 = 5 The degree will be equal to the largest sum.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is -2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its 5 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, the degree is 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for helping me understand it.. i am likeing this ( only for today) .. smiling.. again thanks. :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
