^^^^^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get that because I have a couple of question like that and i wanna Know how to solve for them

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The general form of a hyperbola that opens upwards and downwards is in the form (y-k)^2/(b^2)-(x-h)^2/(a^2)=1 Notice how the values of 'a' and 'b' correspond to x and y respectively. In the case of (y^2)/(9) - (x^2)/(4) = 1, we can rewrite it as (y^2)/(3^2) - (x^2)/(2^2) = 1 So we can see that a = 2 and b = 3

Thank you soo much...Im almost getting it-

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

oh sorry, mybad! Seems I was a biy confused...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's great

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok @slaaibak you werent the only one lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 you had the numbers mixed up a=3 and b=2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

No, 'a' corresponds with x and 'b' corresponds with y. Unless your book is doing it the other way around.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea remember a^2=9 which equals 3 and b^2=4 which equals 2 so a=3 and b=2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So it looks like your book is doing it the other way around.

well Im home schooled for now, but yea
