6x^2-7x-396=0

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

396 = 2*2*3*3*11 6 = 3*2 so what do we combine o get -7?? - so we can factor i can't see any way to do this so i guess we need to us quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using this \[x=(-b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac})\div 2a\]

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yup

I'm thinking quadratic formula too. It's just we haven't started that in this class yet. This equation is problem 6 on a worksheet and I'm just stuck on it. The whole worksheet is figuring out how many rows of corn and peas this chick can put in a rectangular and a square flower bed... this equation is from the total square area of both to find out the # of rows of corn can go in the rectangular bed.

ur equation is like this \[6x ^{2}-7x-396=0\] which goes with \[ax ^{2}+bx+c=0\] just substitute in the formula i give u before and there u will get two values of x tht's ur answer

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

have you used 'completing the square' method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks guys! My brain just hit a wall with this problem, and it's been a while since I've had to do this stuff. You've been incredibly helpful!

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u can use the completing square only when \[x ^{2}\] doesn't have an (a) in other words (a=1) <well tht's what i remember at least loo>

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

no u can use it here by first dividing through by 6 although it would be a bit messy so using the formula would be easier

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly tht's y i usally go with the formula ;)
