In your own opinion, do you think that tv should be limited from children? Also, is the violence from movies and tv shows rubbing off on the next generation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I absolutely believe that tv should be limited. I also think that what they watch on tv does have and affect on their actions and behavior. While I also believe children should be expected to behave in a certain way and mind their manners and be socially adept (for their age, of course), if their parents are not monitoring what is going on in their life, even tv time, then complete chaos is likely to ensue.

I think it should, even though i AM a kid. I'm actually in the 6th grade. And, it really is. Kids I KNOW always think that guns are cool, and want to shoot their teacher, but that is very few of kids. They think that because they play overdoses of call of duty, and also, scientists did a study of how bad spongebob REALLY is, and after 5 minutes of watching it, the kids coldn't even answer a multipilication problem right!?!?!?!?

well, it may be said that digital media like TVs, mobile phones... and stuffs like internet ,gaming, computers, etc, etc play a gigantic role in influencing people's (children's) perception. It ought to be harnessed properly. and... who said videogames are bad,.. websites like lumosity use videogames for a different purpose. But, the addictive nature of videogames has made it possible for people to earn lots at the cost of poisoning young minds... remember the censorship in Australia pertaining to 18+ videogames?... same applies to TVs... and the INTERNET... we ought to harness it properly!

This is a good question, and the debate is never going to end. There are so many relevant points that we could talk about. I'd like to chip in for one point, that was brought up by julianassange. A lot of kids think guns are cool. So do many adults. And kids aren't the only ones who say, "I wanna shoot him/her," when they are provoked or angered. If you take a group of kids who are exposed to guns, you can still see a big difference between kids who talk about shooting people, and kids who would actually do it. Violent media doesn't create violent people. It gives violent people IDEAS on how to express their violent nature. Yes yes, we all have the capacity for violent behavior. But that doesn't make us all violent people.

you are right. But deep down inside, we are violent, some is too uncontrollable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is no doubt that there must be different limitation for children in different ages but I think source of those limitations must be an assembly composed of psychologists, sociologists and ... in every society. And I don't think we should be so pessimist about TV and forget about all the positive impacts.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe there should be limitations on what children watch. I believe if you let a child watch anything, that it kind of strips them of their innocence because they are exposed to too many things. As far as violence on tv. I believe all people are violent, it's just whether we show it or not. How many times have you thought how good it will feel to kick someone's a**? I know I have, but I don't act on it because I understand the consequences of my actions. However, you have people who are impulsive and live in the moment, and they don't think about consequences of their actions (which is a major problem amongst children of today).
