Simplify the following expression: (5x2 + 3x + 4) − (2x2 + 5x − 1).

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

i assume that is \[(5x^2 +3x+4) - (2x^2+5x-1)\]

Use the caret ^ (shift 6) to raise to a power. Collect "like" terms 5x^2 + 3x + 4 - 2x^2 + 6x - 3 (5 - 2)x^2 +(3 + 6)x +(4 - 3) =3x^2 + 9x + 1

Just distribute the negative and eliminate the parentheses. Then just combine like terms. \[(5x^{2} + 3x + 4) - (2x^{2} + 5x - 1) = (5x^{2} + 3x + 4) + -1(2x^{2} + 5x - 1)\]\[5x^{2} + 3x + 4 - 2x^{2} - 5x + 1\]Just combine like terms.
