is education the only solution to poverty? need to do an essay on this topic..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its the longterm solution, but not the shortterm. You need to do both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I used to say yes but nowadays people are getting rich because they find other soultions, they are many ways to success(creativity, art, athletes and so on) some of them aren't very educated but they are rich. try looking at some jobs that are not based on education.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That works if you live in rich western country, but only the extreme minority in poor countries get the chance to be stars in something and get money from it. Education is the only way to get an office job which gives you a good salary compared to some job in a workshop.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And as we know, most of the world lives in poor countries.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but poverty is everywhere, the person did not specifically say how to get rid of poverty in poor countries.. she didn't put any limits.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

most of the poor people live in poor countries.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

obviously but does that mean that there are no poor people in the west? do you know what population of the USA is living in poverty at the moment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The overwhelming majority of the poor people live in the 3rd world countries, and the definition of poor in the west is vastly different from the one who lives in 3rd world country. You cannot compare a people living in benefits in a western nation with a nearly dead for hunger in Ethiopia. Only few get to be stars, and it is never a sure way to get job, but education is. In both western and poor countries.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that, I absolutely agree with the first half of your statement but the second half I am afraid to disagree. Education is no longer a sure way to get a job. many people are graduating from universities with law degrees, you name it but there are no jobs. those people with an education are getting supermarket jobs. We are living in hard times, nothing is guaranteed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but anyway, you are entitled to you opinion! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When we talk about education, we dont talk about university degree, we talk about the education that provides us the ability to read, to count. Think yourself in the poorest rural India, or poorest areas in Yemen. If you can read, you are already more than many, many other people.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's very obvious for people like you and me, because we're lucky that we are provided by basic school, then we go to secondary school, then we even go to university or technical college.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Education doesn't necessarily mean college taught. So saying someone isn't educated doesn't mean they don't have knowledge. They just aren't formally educated. Lack of education and RESOURCES, is what causes poverty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My personal belief is that anywhere, regardless of the economic situation of the country, Education AND Health is necessary. Thriving economically is impossible if you have to prioritize basic survival over everything else. Generally, health is seen as the first step in international development; good education is a natural result of healthy students who are actually able to attend class, or healthy professors who can spend their time teaching; then, as the population becomes educated, health problems start to disappear naturally, business emerges, and poverty is eradicated. An interesting question, however, is whether or not civil liberties are necessary first in order to do this. Does this "formula" work for highly oppressed populations as well as populations with expansive freedom? That might be something to propose!

Wow, very interesting thread. Yes, depending on where you are education is key or not key. In the US if you have a great idea and the knack to sell (sell yourself, meaning skills etc) or create a solution that makes the lives of some easier like creating a company that cleans peoples houses and its successful you are sky rocketed past poverty to being able to live by yourself. In the US you have a great amount of resources there is so many clubs and associations and libraries and NGOs lined up for the sole purpose of helping you out (in relation to your problem). Formal education isn't necessary in poor countries but education is necessary every where. The successful people anywhere are only that way because they know something that others don't and apply it! There are many forms of education too (you can train people and put them in jobs directly like employment agencies or technical schools do) you can send people to regular school and educate them to be a doctor or lawyer prof or electrician or engineer. But basically yes education IS the answer to eradicating poverty but remember to look at all the types of education out there and not just your traditional education path.
