3. A solution containing 45% water is mixed with another solution containing 10% bromine. If the chemist needs 30 liters of the mixture, how many liters of each solution are needed to make a 34.5% water/bromine solution? I got this as my system of equations- .45x+.10y=3 x+y=30 Could anyone check this for me?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

is your first equation : \[\huge.45x+.10y= 3\] ? how you got 3 on RHS ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did .10bromine *3. Just realized that's wrong.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

ok.. other than that, equations look perfect.. go ahead and solve... :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait would the 3 be wrong? and would I do 34.5(30) right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And I got the 3 by .10(30)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.45x+.10y=10.35

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so that's what it would be right? I wasn't so sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah it would be .345(30) not 34.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I just noticed that, but that's instead of the 3. Tyvm :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And it equals 10.35

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tyvm :)

hero (hero):

.45x + .10y = 10.35 x + y = 30
