True or False? A triangle can be formed with side lengths 120, 85, and 220.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Hmm, the main funda is that the sum of any two sides of a triangle, must be GREATER than the third side! But, I have a feeling 120+85 < 220 So what do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here I would use the "Triangle Inequality Theorem" which tells you: "The sum of any two sides of a triangle MUST be greater than the measure of the third side" So break these up - 120 + 85 ?> 220 85 + 220 ?> 120 120 + 220 ?> 85 If these hold, then you have a triangle. If ANY of them fail, then you can't make a triangle.

so its false?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the sum of 120 + 85 isnt large enough.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Yeah it is FALSE! Do you understand this though? @sabimaru has posted a beautiful explanation above.

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

Exactly why. You understood it, great!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sabimaru had a pretty good explanation so it was easy to understand aswell as you @apoorvk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great! I'm blushing over here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol good
