Need to solve for X and Y: 3x - y = -5 x + 2y = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Multiply the 2nd line by -3 and cancel the the x's to solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once you have y you can rearrange for solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooooo, I didn't even think of that!

OpenStudy (ganpat):

multiply equation 1 by 2.. 6x -2y = -10 and add it with eqnt 2.. x + 2y = 3 there fore you get is; 7x = -7 therefore x = -1 , substitute in any of eqtn.. solve y ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so your cancelling the Y's rather than the X's, right Ganpat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah he is, he's solving for x first, then y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it! OK, thx!

OpenStudy (ganpat):

its either way.. for cancelling x, multiply equation, by 2.. and then subtract both..
