could anyone explain to me what does this mean? a congruent b(mod p)

Parth (parthkohli):

This means that when a is divided by p, then the remainder is b.

Parth (parthkohli):

Do you need any more help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well i was reading sets and relations and this notation came up . I doubt its got anything to do with mod as in remainder..Are you sure?

Parth (parthkohli):

Yes, I am 100% sure. This can also be represented as: \(a \mod{p} = b \)

Parth (parthkohli):

In programming, \(a\% b = p\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still dont understand how could a relation be a illmod p=b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

another way to put it is \(a\equiv b (\text{ mod } n) \iff n|a-b\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

aah okay got it now . Thank you ParthKohli and satellite73
