According to the theory of endosymbiosis, describe how mitochondria came to exist within our modern-day eukaryotic cells.

My quick summary: Mitochondria possess their own genome and are hypothesized to have been a sort of bacteria that somehow became incorporated into the cytoplasm of larger cells.
