in which compound does carbon have an oxidation state of zero?

OpenStudy (preetha):

Elements have an oxidation number of 0. See the rules. http://www.occc.edu/kmbailey/chem1115tutorials/oxidation_numbers.htm

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

@Preetha all the elements in periodic table have oxidation state zero!!!but the question was for compound!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the central carbon of neopentane is usually assigned an oxidation state of zero. Of course, if you mean "substance" and not "compound" then Preetha has the simplest answer: any carbon in any allotrope of elemental carbon has oxidation state zero, by definition.
