There are a number of reasons for this, but one of the biggest was in limiting outside influences on their culture. There was also little need for China to indulge in the kind of heavy trade and exploration that Europe was engaged in as China literally had everything that the empire needed - food, ore, and manpower. As far as it was concerned, it was the center of the world and needed little else from what was beyond its borders. It wasn't ignorant of the world at large, but at the same time, Chinese rulers that espoused isolationism felt that there was little that other nations offered over what they already had.
