OpenStudy (anonymous):

which of the alkaline metals (group 1) has the least metallic character?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hulp :{

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its francium because its got most of its outer shells already filled

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but then you would have to consider the ionization charge on the metal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i think its lithium

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still confused?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well now i am confused because you said two different things ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i would go with the second one. lithium has a lowest ion charge versus the other atoms in the group right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i thought ionization energy increases from bottom to top?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha my mistake your right. i thinking off radii size. so its back to francium. well wouldnt it make sense that because that it was lower that it would react differently from the others?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think we are answering each other through questions and isnt that ironic? haha jk. yes, i guess i will go with francium.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha i see that we are but am i making sense to yu?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lower ionization energy means it is easier for its valence electron to be taken away

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that mean it is very reactive? but how does reactivity relate to metallicness

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no its not that reactant.remember my first comment? its shells are mostly filled. its mostly going to have be a "right" fit for it to be reactant. other wise it would be like lithium whose shells are empty and is the most reactant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont the other group 1 metals have mostly filled shells too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no the number of shells increase as we go down. like hydrogen has one shell versus magnesium which has three.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but they are all filled the same since they all have one valence electron. so you are saying since francium has more shells in general, it is not reactive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the one means that it has one electron in the most outer shell. (confusing myself as well. its been awhile).but then that would prove that it group one is still the most reactant. so forget what i said about bshells. i was thinking of something else. all that matters is the radii and the ionization. its the largest atom and it has the lowest ionizatin versus its familly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we can leave it at that then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm ok. sorry if i confused yu
