trick is to say that washing the van is 1 as in one job jeff takes two hours, so his rate is \(\frac{1}{2}\) per hour

now we use amount equals rate times time jeffs rate is \(\frac{1}{2}\) and if we put time as \(t\) his contribution is \(\frac{1}{2}t\) lucy's is \(\frac{2}{3}t\) and we want to know how long (as in solve for \(t\) ) it will take them to complete one job set \[\frac{1}{2}t+\frac{2}{3}t=1\] and solve for \(t\)

there are many ways to solve this but in this case we can simply add on the left \[\frac{1}{2}t+\frac{2}{3}t=1\] \[\frac{7}{6}t=1\] \[t=\frac{6}{7}\]
