Which mechanism do sponges possess that makes a predator think twice before attacking it?

OpenStudy (stephstar101):

They can produce toxins or unpleasant tastes/odors that ward off predators.

Generally, if a species can't move, can't hide, doesn't appear to have any other form of defence, and has potential predators but hasn't gone extinct, it's probably poisonous. This applies to plants too: just because a plant isn't poisonous to us doesn't mean it isn't poisonous to a wide range of insects.

But I would like to point out that some sponges also have a hard skeleton, which probably protects them to some extent as well.
