how did mendeleev predict the properties of the elements that belongs to the blanks in periodic table

He predicted their atomic masses by averaging those around them. EX: Germanium (Element 32) Its atomic mass is roughly the average of the elements above and below (Si and Sn), even though it wasn't discovered yet. And it reacted similarly.
