Write a paragraph explaining the meaning of the poem. Make sure to answer the following questions: What is the tone of the poem? What types of figurative language was used? "Hope" is the Thing with Feathers "Hope" is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops at all, And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm. I've heard it in the chillest land And on the strangest sea, Yet never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me. ‐Emily wingspaninson

Hope, that optimistic feeling, is like a little bird that continues singing through the worst of times like a storm and doesn't give up or fall silent. It continues to sustain the poetess through her darkest times , which she refers to as "chillest land ' ( the Arctic) or" strangest sea". It continues to provide comfort without demanding anything in return. ( the little bird never "asked a crumb of me"). Emily wingspaninson uses metaphors - the bird for hope - the chillest land for despair, the strangest sea for the feeling of being alone and lost; the storm as the image of life events that overwhelm you.
