Well, if you want to know the meaning you have to look beyond his metaphors. People are in darkness of the cave because they aren't enlightened. They would much rather stay in the darkness, believe the things they're used to believe than venture to know more. Philosophers transcend this by escaping the cave, reaching enlightenment then come back to the cave to teach people what they found out. It's just that more often than not, people don't believe them -- which is why a lot of people think Philosophy's bullpellet. Hahaha. Here's a good site that might help you.
