can anyone tell me why is the vessel carrying deoxygenated blood to the lungs called pulmonary artery?? well ive read that the vessel which carry deoxygenated blood is called vein...!
Because everything that goes to the heart is called vein or vena and everything that leaves the heart is called artery. And I tried to find a reasonable explanation for this .... well, look at www.bcb.uwc.ac.za/SCI_ED/grade10/manphys/vessel.htm http://etap.org/demo/biology/lesson9/instructions1tutor.html
Generally, veins do carry de-oxygenated blood and arteries usually carry oxygenated blood... but this is actually just a coincidence. As dejavu_april0415 said, whether a blood vessel is called a vein or an artery actually has NOTHING to do with whether it's carrying oxygenated or deoxygenated blood. The only thing that matters is whether it's going toward or away from the heart. Veins go toward the heart, arteries go away. That means that a vessel going AWAY FROM the heart to the lungs is going to be an artery, no matter what kind of blood is inside it, and a vessel going from the lungs TOWARD the heart is going to be a vein. Don't worry if you mess it up from time to time. It can be confusing, and I often mix them up myself.
