Who was appointed to the Supreme Court? Allan Bakke John Hinckley, Jr. Michael Dukakis Clarence Thomas
Alan Bakke was the plaintiff in a famous discrimination suit against the University of California in which the Supreme Court said that explicit racial quotas in university admissions was unconstitutional. Hinckley tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan, and is confined in a mental institution as a result. Michael Dukakis, former two-term governor of Massachusetts, was the Democratic nominee for President against President George H. W. Bush in 1988. Which leaves Clarence Thomas, who was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan. He is known for his strong judicial "originalism," which means he thinks the Constitution means just what it says, nothing more and nothing less, for better or worse, and strongly disapproves of efforts by judges to "adapt" the Constitution to modern issues -- to judge in the spirit of the Constitution, you might say, instead of according to its actual words and text.
