Points (1,1) and (1,4) lie on line K. What is the slope of the line that is parallel to K?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

infinity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i wrong?

hero (hero):

Does infinity have a slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes @hero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have heard "infinity" before, but in fact the line has no slope you cannot divide by zero the slope of a line measures the increase or decrease in \(y\) for every unit increase in \(x\) since this line is vertical, the question is meaningless in this context like asking how many miles per gallon i get on my bicycle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

undefined ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and so the answer is "the line has no slope" or "the slope is undefined"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so @Hero was wrong then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw of course in english "no slope" might be taken to mean "zero" like "i have no money" means "i have zero dollars" but in this case "no slope" means the slope does not exist, not "it is zero"

hero (hero):

How can I be wrong for asking you a question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh sorry I thought you were saying it. My bad.
